The United Nations emergency aid official said that the death toll from the Turkey and Syria earthquake is likely to exceed 56,000

The death toll from the devastating earthquakes that hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria this week is expected to exceed 56,000, said Martin Griffiths, the United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator.

Griffiths told Sky News: “I think it’s difficult to estimate precisely because we need to stay under the rubble, but I’m sure it will double or increase.” “This is terrifying. This is nature responding in a really harsh way.”

A pair of earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck nine o’clock Monday, toppling buildings and destroying structures.

About 13.5 million people live in the hardest hit area, which has a radius of about 310 miles. The death toll rose to at least 33,185 by Sunday afternoon.

A large-scale search and rescue operation was still underway Sunday, with 34,717 Turkish soldiers joining 9,595 personnel from 74 other countries. First responders were using thermal cameras to search for survivors under piles of concrete.

Meanwhile, Turkish officials began to point out faulty construction and lax building codes for the scale of the damage.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said Sunday that at least 131 people are under investigation for their role in the construction of buildings that collapsed during the quake.
