Watching the volcano: a mythical part of the Willoko River was once again revealed
Hawaiian Subaba Man, Demai Maoist, has made several adventures on the Willow River in the mythical past. He saved his mother, Hina, who lived in the cave behind Wayanoyo (Rainbow Falls), from Kona, and she is threatened Moo (the legendary giant lizard), eventually killing him and leaving his body as a small island in the pool in front of Hina’s cave.
Signs of the battle between Maui and Kona were found higher on the Willow River. As Maui pushed his spear through the rocks to move the mooo, he left a hole near a waterfall named Pukamaui located. But the dowry fled to another hiding place along the river only to find and defend Maui again and again.
Finally, Kona finds deep waters and hides in a series of pools a short distance above Waianuenue. Maui searches up and down the river and finally discovers the Mamo, but he cannot reach it with his spear. But he had an idea.
Maui asked the volcano gods for some hot stones. Pele agreed to his request, and Maui threw them in the ponds. The water started to boil, burning the pear and forcing a kona to the surface. Maui continued the battle, eventually killing Kona and letting his body continue downstream over Wainoyu to rest in the pool below.
These sites are now located within Wailuku River State Park in two sections: Waianuenue (Rainbow Falls), where Hina lived in the cave behind the waterfalls, and Boiling Pots, a series of deep swimming pools where Kona tried to hide, a little further – a river.
Both sites show the results of the lava flow from Mauna Loa that entered the Wailuku River channel nearly 10,000 years ago. The lava didn’t seem to fill the canal completely, and the water continued to flow over the flow as it cooled. This lava flow can be seen as a ledge in Waianuenue (and also forms the roof of the Heena Cave below).
The same influx hosts several “pits” in the boiling pot section of the garden. Over the past several years, potholes have been prevented from seeing due to the growth of various plant species. In the first pictures of the boiled pots area, the vegetation on its banks is shrubs and low grass, but in modern times tall paisley trees on the northern bank and many other tree types on the south bank obscure the views of the river. But in the first few months of this year, the southern bank near the park was purged, and now, these pots can be seen again, at times when the river is high and fast, the turbulent waters being pushed through the pots seem to “boil” with the flow Water.
Despite the name, the water is usually not hot. It was the only time in the recent history of the river that the water was heated in 1855 and 1856 when the lava flow from Mauna Loa progressed through the saddle between this volcano and Maunaki. Lava flowed into the Wailuku River canal, but did not cross it, about 4 miles above Boiling Pots.
Even cold water can be dangerous and swimmers have drowned in the Willow River. The river channel is relatively narrow and deep so that the rain from the slope can cause the river to rise quickly and become very turbulent. This can happen even when the weather is sunny in the boiling vessels but the cloudy dark slope. Locals quickly learn that “if the mountain is black, go back.”

Volcano activity updates
Kailua volcano does not explode. The USGS Volcano alert level remains at NORMAL (https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vhp/about_alerts.html). Kilauea updates are released monthly.
Kelwa monitoring data for the past month show variable but typical rates of earthquake and ground deformation, low rates of sulfur dioxide emissions, and only minor geological changes since the end of volcanic activity in September 2018. The water lake at the bottom of Halema’uma ‘continues to expand and deepen slowly. For the latest information on the lake, see https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/summit_water_resources.html.
Mauna Loa does not erupt and remains at ADVISORY volcano alert level. This level of alert does not mean that an imminent eruption or that progression to an eruption from the current level of disturbances is certain. Mauna Loa updates are released weekly.
Last week, about 56 minor earthquakes were recorded under upper altitudes in Mona Loa. Most of these depths occurred in shallow depths of less than 5 miles. GPS measurements show a slowly increasing peak in the long term, consistent with the magma’s supply of shallow volcano storage system. Gas concentrations and fumarol temperatures as measured in both cone sulfur and peak remain stable. Webcams show no changes to the scene.
There were four events with three or more physical reports in the Hawaiian Islands during the past week: a 3.5-magnitude earthquake 4 miles east of Pahala at 11:45 am on July 7; A 3.0 magnitude earthquake 6 miles east of Pahala at 8:24 pm July 24. 4.3 magnitude earthquake 8 miles south of the fern forest at 2:18 pm on July 3; And a 4.6 magnitude earthquake 9 miles south of the Fern Forest at 11:20 pm on July 2.
