The whole world of Fatima Vision is gone. On a piece of wasteland in the broken city of Adiyaman, you are trying to keep warm.

As she walks around the fire with her sister and brother-in-law, she writes down the names of the dead: “My husband’s family has suffered many losses.

“His mother, father, brothers, brothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces. Our family apartment fell apart. Meanwhile, my uncle, his wife, their child, and their mother-in-law lost their lives.”

Thirteen family members died under the rubble. Ten children were orphaned. She shows us a picture of their house as it looked before the earthquake.

A treasured four-storey apartment filled with three generations. Across the road are now her twisted remains – a house turned tomb where her loved ones died.

They were all victims of an earthquake that kept recurring in her mind.

“Even when we stand up, we still feel like we’re shaking,” she says.

In a state of shock, sleep is fleeting. All around them, rescuers with diggers try to recover the dead, the living doing what they can to survive the nights when the temperature drops below freezing.

“In the first few days, we heard stories of people being pulled out of the rubble but dying from the cold,” says Fatima.

Freezing weather isn’t the only challenge for survivors.

“There is no work. We are broke,” says Habib, Fatima’s brother-in-law.

He shows us the van where they take turns sleeping. As the eldest male, Habib was now the main provider for the surviving relatives, including the ten orphans. With their home and trade destroyed, there is no future for them in Adiyaman.

“For me I have no hope,” he says, “it’s over. The city is over.”

People left Adiyaman in droves. The power is incomplete and survivors tell us that the water is cut off or polluted. On many streets, tent villages provided by the state now replace homes.

Near Fatima, we meet Ace Kaigosuz who shows us the shelter given by the government and which she shares with ten others. They do not have toilets or showers. She explains that people defecate near where their food is prepared. Illness is a major concern.

“We can’t deal with the outbreak now. Those who survive will die after that. Half of the city is dead,” she says.

Turkey is now doing what it can, but the need is urgent. For many here, the suffering is endless.
