Rescue crews in Turkey found survivors on the eighth day after the earthquake

Rescuers in Turkey pulled several people alive from the rubble on Tuesday, nearly 200 hours after a series of powerful earthquakes hit the region.

Recent rescue operations included one of the collapsed buildings in Adiyaman province and two others from a destroyed building in central Kahramanmaras, near the epicenter.

Turkish television broadcast scenes of the rescue operations, but experts warned that the window would be closed to find more people alive in what remains of the collapsed buildings after a long time.

Turkish residents of Samandağ, in Hatay Province, complained that the government had not done enough in searching for survivors.

An earthquake survivor told VOA’s Turkish Service that everything is done through volunteers and community efforts, not by the government.

“We rescued a woman and her child from the rubble. Alive. With our own efforts. With our sledgehammers and sledgehammers. I had many friends with me,” said the survivor.

Another said, “Volunteers work here, day and night, non-stop. They don’t even eat. They don’t even come to drink water. AFAD (Turkish Disaster Management Authority) came to our supposed rescue. The team came here to work on detection. They just came and left.” They said, ‘There was nothing,’ and then they came back and left.”

Turkish authorities have reported that at least 31,643 people have been killed by the devastating earthquake in the Gaziantep region.

Across the border in northern Syria, the United Nations Office of Humanitarian Affairs said Monday that the death toll there had exceeded 4,300, with 7,600 wounded.
