Today’s Texas earthquake: A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Hermley in the Great Plains region

HERMLAGE, Texas (KTRK) — The most powerful earthquake to hit Texas since December struck an area outside a small town in the state’s Great Plains region, the US Geological Survey reported Thursday.

USGS data showed the 4.7-magnitude quake was located nine miles outside of Hermley, Texas, a town of 345 people located 96 miles southeast of Lubbock.

The quake was registered at 4:29 a.m. and had a depth of about five miles below the surface.

A pair of aftershocks were also recorded: one measuring at 2.6 magnitude about 13 minutes later, and the other about two hours after the original, measuring 2.5 magnitude.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage in the area. All signs point to injection wells in the area as the cause.

Aside from smaller seismic activity, the Hermley earthquake is the strongest earthquake measured in West Texas since the 5.4-magnitude quake of December 16, 2022, which was centered 13 miles outside Midland.

A month earlier, a similar 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook outside Menton, Texas, which was considered the strongest in the state in three decades.

While the earthquakes on Thursday and late last year were recorded on seismometers, they may be classified as “mild,” according to the California Earthquake Service.

For comparison, a small earthquake with a magnitude between 3.0 and 3.9 can be considered. The highest magnitude score is 8.0 or greater, or “significant” for which significant damage is expected.
