Turkish club Trabzonspor unveils a tifo to honor earthquake victims and rescue workers ahead of the match against Basel

A series of massive earthquakes devastated Syria and Turkey. Football has since been an afterthought, but on Thursday, Turkish club Trabzonspor hosted Swiss club Basel in a Europa League match that will give all proceeds to earthquake victims. At that same game, the rescuers were honored with a poignant tifo.

A photo of a lifeguard carrying a baby caught attention at Akyazı Arena. Also featured in the touching tribute is Proteo, a Mexican German Shepherd rescue dog who died while assisting in disaster response efforts.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck early on February 6 in the regions of southern Turkey and northern Syria. The original quake was devastating, but a second magnitude 7.6 quake caused more damage hours later. The death toll exceeded 41,000.

Money from Thursday ticket sales went to relief funds, and there was also the option to purchase virtual tickets to donate. Players and officials wore black armbands on their right arms.

The two teams exited the tunnel at the same time. A banner in Turkish that read “Yaninizdayz” – which means “We are with you” – was on the field in front of the players.

There was a minute’s silence before the match, and both teams agreed not to celebrate any goals scored because it seemed inappropriate to do so given the tragic circumstances. Trabzonspor won the match 1-0 with a goal by Jens Stryger Larsen in the 65th minute.

Another Turkish team, Hatayspor, withdrew from the Turkish Super League, as one of its players, winger Christian Atsu, disappeared following the earthquake and has not been found so far. The Super League as a whole is currently postponed.

“We are still looking for Christian,” Atsu’s agent, Nana Secher, told CNN this week. “We have asked Disaster and Emergency Management to put his picture in all local and national hospitals.”
