The Middle East earthquake shakes the state of Vermont with Turkish relations

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) — More than 5,000 miles from Turkey and Syria, Vermont is where people are still being pulled from the rubble after the devastating earthquake that devastated cities and killed at least 40,000 people, but there are some Vermont residents. Turkish relations feel the impact thousands of miles away.

Tuckerbox Café is the place to go for authentic Turkish cuisine in White River Junction. Owners Vural and Jacky Oktay may be running the restaurant in Vermont, but mentally they’re in Turkey, Vural’s first home.

“You have to worry about your relatives. One second later, I was worried about everyone. Syria, Turkey, all human beings,” said Vural Oktay.

They will deal with this for years to come. So we hope the support continues to flow in and continue to support them because they are such beautiful people. “Turkish culture and Turkish people are unique,” ​​said Jacky Oktay.

The couple is closely linked to the situation in Turkey. Vural said that while his family and close friends are safe, he says relatives on his father’s side died as a result of the quake.

“I wish I could go help or something. I was about to go see what I can do,” Vural Oktay said.

“We have relatives in Istanbul who go door to door collecting blankets and whatever they can, tents and sleeping bags to send to the area. So you definitely feel like you need to do something and it’s really important,” said Caki Oktay.

Vural knows what that looks like. He was in Istanbul during the 1999 earthquake which was known as the most devastating in Turkey, even the one the country is suffering from now.

“It’s like a nightmare. It sounds and moves, vibrates and never ends and you actually don’t count because you really lack the opportunity. Like a little bit of time you’re going to do what you have to do in that time,” said Vural Oktay.

The outpouring of support and inquiries for help from regulars and people around the area has been overwhelming, Jackie said, and very much appreciated.

“There is not a huge Turkish population in Vermont, and we are just honored that we were able to bring that into the community,” said Jackie Oktay.

The duo is fundraising to help relief efforts on the grounds.
