6 dead as a result of another earthquake that shook the Turkish-Syrian border – the world

Six people were killed in the latest earthquake to hit the border region between Turkey and Syria, authorities said on Tuesday, two weeks after a massive earthquake killed more than 47,000 people and damaged or destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes.

The epicenter of the 6.4-magnitude earthquake on Monday, which struck at a time when rescue work from the first devastating quake was underway near the Turkish city of Antakya, was felt in Syria, Egypt and Lebanon.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said 90 aftershocks, adding new shock to the residents of Antakya who were left homeless and living in tents due to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6.

Officials say more than 41,000 people were killed in Turkey in the first quake, while the death toll in neighboring Syria reached nearly 6,000.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has faced criticism over what many Turks describe as a slow response and over construction policies that have led to the collapse of thousands of apartment buildings, trapping victims under rubble.

“It is our duty to hold the guilty accountable before the law,” Erdogan said in the southern province of Osmaniye.

In power for two decades, he faces presidential and parliamentary elections in May, though disaster could lead to a delay. Even before the earthquakes, polls showed it was being squeezed by a cost of living crisis, which could worsen as the disaster disrupts agricultural production.

He promised a quick rebuild

Erdogan has promised a swift reconstruction effort, though experts say it could be a recipe for another disaster if safety steps are sacrificed in the race to rebuild.

“We will not run away from the ballot box or ignore democracy,” said Devlet Bahceli, an ally of Erdogan and leader of the nationalist MHP, adding that the opposition was “obsessed and misguided” for criticizing the government’s response to the earthquake and discussing the timing of the elections.

He said, “Turkey… will bury you in the ballot box soon.”

Turkey’s health minister, Fahrettin Koca, said 294 people were injured in the latest earthquake, adding that patients had been evacuated from some health facilities that remained operational after the first quakes, with buildings cracked.

In Antakya, a man hugged and consoled another who was crying after news of the dead in the already devastated city after they entered a building to retrieve their belongings when the latest earthquake struck, causing the building to collapse.

One of the dead, covered in a yellow bag, was lowered by a rescue team down a flight of stairs from the destroyed apartment building, before being placed in a coffin to be transported in a municipal truck.

And in Syria, already wracked by war for more than a decade, most of the deaths occurred in the northwest, where the United Nations said 4,525 people were killed. The area is controlled by militants at war with President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria said 1,414 people were killed in areas under government control.
