A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hits New Britain

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the province of New Britain in Papua New Guinea, Australia’s closest neighbor.

The quake struck at 7.24 am (EST) at a depth of 57 kilometres, according to Australian Geosciences.

The US Geological Survey says the quake occurred about 47 kilometers from Kembe, the provincial capital.

There are currently no reports of major damage or injuries.

Papua New Guinea is prone to earthquakes because it lies along the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean.

Along the ring, shifting tectonic plates move against each other, causing tremors.

The “ring” runs along a 40,000-kilometer arc from the boundaries of the Pacific Plate, to smaller plates such as the Philippine Sea Plate, to the Cocos and Nazca plates that line the Pacific Rim.

The Ring of Fire is also home to the most active volcanoes in the world.

Three people were killed, others were injured, and infrastructure was damaged in the aftermath of the powerful earthquake.
