A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hits central Turkey

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey on Saturday. EMSC said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

The residents felt the recent tremors after the death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, which hit the two countries earlier this month, exceeded 50,000. Turkey has claimed more than 44,000 deaths.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the death toll in Turkey due to earthquakes rose to 44,218 on Friday night, while the announced death toll in Syria reached 5,914.

Meanwhile, the Turkish authorities have expanded the investigation into the collapse of buildings due to earthquakes. Bekir Bozdag, the Minister of Justice, said more than 600 people have been investigated in connection with collapsed buildings.

Bozdag’s remarks came during his speech during a press conference in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, which was among the 10 provinces affected by the disaster.

He said that 79 building contractors, 74 legally binding building owners, 13 property owners, and 18 people altering buildings are among those legally detained and detained.
