A woman from Wenatchee describes providing assistance in Turkey after the devastating earthquake

During what Jamie Smith describes as the most impactful trip of her life, she traveled more than 2,600 miles to distribute food, water and blankets to those affected.

Wenatchee, Washington – Earlier this month, King V told you about a Wenatchee woman who helped in the aftermath of earthquakes in Turkey.

Now she’s back in the US, sharing her experience and describing what the relief efforts underway abroad look like.

“I could get away with this, but their lives are such a mess and it will take them a long time to recover from that,” said Jamie Smith, reflecting on what she said was the most impactful journey of her life.

“A lot of the buildings that were left standing, they weren’t safe to live in. So a lot of people were living in the tent cities that were popping up or they were living around small fires that they were building among the rubble,” Smith said.

King 5’s Brady Wakayama spoke with Smith, a nurse who lives in Wenatchee, earlier this month. She and three other volunteers through the nonprofit organization Empact Northwest headed to Turkey to offer help, just two days after the country’s devastating earthquake.

“You have a whole generation now that has lost someone and there will be that trauma that comes from that and just that sadness, that comes from that, so your heart really went out to everyone out there knowing what awaits them,” Haddad.

Over 10 days, she and her team traveled more than 2,600 miles across Turkey to provide food, water and blankets to countless affected families. “So many people go through such a difficult thing, and just seeing their generosity and kindness and how wonderful they are with each other is just such a great reminder of the humanity that still exists,” Smith said.

Smith said she’d be more than willing to come back to provide additional help and hopes others will consider doing anything they can to help as well.

“I just hope that if we have something that happened here in the US of this magnitude, we’ll also get help from other countries because it’s just too much to deal with and I think the more we can help each other it makes a better world overall,” Smith said.
