Fans of the Turkish club Besiktas throw their toys on the field to children affected by earthquakes in Turkey, Syria

Turkey and Syria have been devastated in a series of recent earthquakes, with more than 50,000 people dead – including former Premier League striker Christian Atsu – across neighboring countries since the first strike on 6 February. To heal from the tragedy, fans of the Turkish football club Besiktas are directing their passion towards the cause.

During Besiktas’ match against Antalyaspor on Sunday, fans threw thousands of soft toys onto the pitch in a touching and large-scale donation for earthquake-affected children. Throwing started at 4:17 in the game because the first earthquake happened at 4:17 in the morning on February 6th.

Besiktas fans have thrown toys onto the field at least once before, as they did in 2011 to donate to earthquake-affected children in the Turkish city of Van.

Turkish football club Trabzonspor has unveiled a tifo to honor earthquake victims and rescue workers ahead of its match against Swiss club Basel earlier this month. In that game, all ticket sales went to relief funds, and a banner reading “Yaninizdayiz”—which translates to “We are with you”—was at the Akyazi Arena.
