59 people, including 12 children, drown when boat sinks off Italy – BBC News

At least 59 migrants, including 12 children, have died and dozens more are missing after their boat capsized in rough seas off southern Italy. The overloaded boat broke up near the coastal town of Crotone in the Calabria region as it tried to disembark with at least 150 people on board. Many bodies have been recovered from the beach of a nearby marine resort. Large numbers of people fleeing conflict and poverty make the crossing from Africa to Italy every year. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who visited the scene, said around 30 people were still missing. The coast guard said they had recovered 80 people alive, “including some who managed to reach the coast after sinking”. The boat that left Turkey a few days ago was carrying passengers from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Iran. President Sergio Mattarella said many were fleeing “very difficult conditions”. One survivor was arrested on suspicion of migrant smuggling, customs police said. It has been reported that it sank after hitting rocks during rough weather. A large rescue operation was mounted.
