Strong solidarity is essential for earthquake victims
On February 6, two devastating earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria. 13.4 million people, or 15.7 percent of Turkey’s population, live in the ten cities affected by the earthquake; Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Osmaniye, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya and Elazig.
The earthquake affected area produces 9.3 percent of Turkey’s GDP. The region accounts for about 11 percent of Turkey’s businesses and taxpayers, with inputs accounting for 8.5 percent of the country’s total exports. The percentage of employees covered by the social security system in the region is 11.7 percent.
The World Bank said in its initial estimates that the earthquake caused direct damages of up to 34.2 billion US dollars, equivalent to 4 percent of Turkey’s GDP in 2021. According to various estimates, rebuilding cities and homes could cost double or triple. This amount.
The joint mission from 21-24 February visited seven of the affected districts, a 1,500km drive from Adana to Malatya, and noted with great sadness the massive devastation with most towns reduced to piles of debris.
The expedition was shocked when it witnessed the complete collapse of the ancient city of Antakya, which is close to the Syrian border. The 114 seconds of the first quake were far more devastating than the war for the city across the border in Syria, which has now lost all of its historical heritage.
Community solidarity, from other parts of the country and around the world, kicked into action as rescue operations and humanitarian aid with food, clothing and shelter arrived in the area. There are food banks providing free hot meals, and tents and containers are still being installed for accommodation under the harsh winter conditions. However, people still needed more tents to survive.
The mission visited twelve trade union workplaces and met workers and local union representatives. The region plays an important role in manufacturing, particularly in the textile, apparel, steel, engineering, oil and gas, and mining sectors. Some workplaces have already started operating without their full capacity.
Affiliated unions, such as Petrol-İş, Teksif, Tes-İş, Öziplik-İş and Özçelik-İş, have reported direct membership losses. Most of the surviving workers lost their family members, relatives and close friends. Union members reported that their homes collapsed and severely damaged. Workplaces offer temporary accommodations, while some workers have sought to find other cities. It is reported that two million people have applied to the government to help them leave the region.
Turkish trade unions mobilized to help members and communities. Unions formed their own rescue teams, or joined with others to save lives. Thousands of miners from other regions traveled to the affected area and played an important role in the rescue effort. The extraordinary efforts of the miners have been recognized by the whole country.
From February 8, a 90-day state of emergency was declared for the affected area. During that time, employers will not be able to lay off workers or cancel service contracts.
Luc Triangle, Secretary General of the European Industrial Trade Confederation says:
“The mission was the most tragic moment of my life with what I observed.
It is everyone’s responsibility to find the bodies of those still trapped under the rubble. Cities and homes can be rebuilt, but unfortunately, we cannot bring back those we have lost. It is time to show strong solidarity with our affiliates for the sake of their affected members in the region.”
Kemal Ozkan, Assistant Secretary General of the World Federation of Processing Industries, No.:
“What we witnessed during our mission is unforgettable and leaves a great shock in our minds. The reality is much worse than what we saw on any screen.
It is time for our global and European families to show solidarity with our sisters and brothers in the affected areas. We have to stand shoulder to shoulder with them during these difficult times.”
