5.8-magnitude earthquake hits southern Mexico

A moderate-sized earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale has jolted southern Mexico, seismologists and residents said, and a slight tremor was felt as far away as Guatemala. There were no immediate reports of major damage.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 10:40 pm local time on Wednesday, was near the town of San Francisco del Mar on Mexico’s Pacific coast, about 62 kilometers east of Tehuantepec.

Mexico’s seismological agency put the initial magnitude at 5.8, down from a previous estimate of 6.2. It struck about 98 kilometers below the surface, making it a fairly deep earthquake.

The USGS put the size a bit lower, at 5.7.

Residents of the area described the shaking as short and relatively weak. “The bed was moving sideways, and the lamp was moving too,” a resident, about 185 kilometers from the epicenter, told EMSC.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

Mexico sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines that run around the Pacific Ocean basin that is prone to large earthquakes. In September, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the western state of Michoacan, killing two people and injuring dozens.

The September earthquake occurred just an hour after the nationwide preparedness exercise, which took place on the anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that killed more than 10,000 people. It also marks the anniversary of an earthquake in 2017 that killed 370 people.
