SALT LAKE CITY – Pieces of Utah’s past are stored in the basement of Rio Grande Train Station in Salt Lake City.

The Utah Departments of History and Art collected a total of 1.8 million items of cultural and historical significance. The carefully curated group fills the basement of the old station where the Utah State Historical Society has a research center on the main floor.

The public never had access to the basement, and after the earthquake that hit Salt Lake City in March, the building was now completely closed for repair.

In an effort to share a little of Utah’s history, FOX 13 teamed up with Utah’s Department of History and Art. The experts in these organizations will show us some of their favorite pieces from the permanent collection. We will show one every day from July 4 to July 24.

The piece presented in this story dates back to the 1940s when Utah’s white water options were still under exploration.
