Magnitude 2.5 earthquake rocks Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand

An earthquake of magnitude 2.5 struck around 12.45 am in Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand state on Sunday.

A 2.5-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Uttarkashi town of Uttarakhand (representative image).

By Ankit Sharma, Omkar Bahuguna: A 2.5-magnitude earthquake hit Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand on the night between Saturday and Sunday. The earthquake occurred at around 12:45 am. The Indian Meteorological Department said the epicenter was a forest in Sirur village in Bhatwadi Tehsil district.

So far, there have been no reports of injuries or property losses so far.

The first tremor was followed by three tremors, all occurring within five to 10 minutes. Awakened by the earthquakes, local residents rushed into the streets in panic.

This comes days after a 2.4-magnitude earthquake hit the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand on Thursday. Also earlier in December, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake hit Uttarkashi in December 2022.

Uttarkashi is about 290 kilometers from Joshimath, the slowly sinking holy city.
