HOUSTON — Two Houston-area doctors returned home Saturday after spending two weeks on an emergency mission helping people affected by devastating earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.

About a month ago, Dr. Sophia Banno and Dr. Dania Al-Baba, along with the rest of the country, woke up in the United States to the news of a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake hitting Syria and Turkey. More than 50,000 people died and more than 100,000 were injured as a result of the natural disaster.

Dr. Banu is a psychiatrist and associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine and Dr. Albaba is a resident at the school. The two spent time treating patients and helping to educate and train emergency responders in countries.

“We are all human and we all feel pain. But we have so much to be grateful for that you forget your discomfort that you forget you are not at home and not in your bed,” said Dr. Bano. “You do anything to help someone in need, and I think that is what makes us stronger.” “.
