The vigil commemorates Turkey’s earthquake victims and recovery efforts

(CBS Detroit) – Monday marks a month since the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey.

On Sunday night, a small vigil was held that reiterated steadfastness and humanity among those affected and work to help those affected by the natural disaster.

“I’ve had earthquakes before. I’ve had magnitude 5 earthquakes before, which is nothing compared to this earthquake,” said Para Zhili, a vascular surgeon in Flint who was there during the quake.

Al-Zuhaili was there on a frequent visit to continue his studies as a public health student working on his Masters in Public Health. Faced with jet lag, he says he’s been wide awake, getting ready for a Monday morning meeting.

“I knew from the start that this is not a simple earthquake, that you can sit and wait it out. I knew I needed to run outside,” Al-Zuhaili said.

Zheli was lucky, and he shared his story with many others who came to the Turkish American Cultural Association in Wiksum for a vigil.

Stories of resilience were shared from people who volunteered their time and lived through the atrocities faced by Turkey and neighboring countries. As the sun set on Sunday night, candles were lit and a moment of silence was required to recognize those who lost their lives during the earthquake and its aftermath.

“Community participation and coordination are paramount in situations like this,” says Engin Turesen, general counsel for Turkey in Chicago. Torresen flew in from Chicago to speak to the crowd and share how far the support effort has come, and how far they still need to go.

“Just the last month won’t be enough to help,” said Thoresen. “It’s going to be like a marathon, and it’s going to take more and more constant effort to make things better,” he concluded.
