BEIJING: A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Tangshan, north China, on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, bringing back memories of a devastating 1976 earthquake that was the bloodiest in the modern era. The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 6:38 am (2238 GMT), and the epicenter was in a residential area on the outskirts outside Tangshan city center, about 200 km east of Beijing. China Earthquake Authority estimated its strength at 5.1, and said it struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). On July 28, 1976, Tangshan, then the coal mining city with a population of about one million people, was destroyed by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake and aftershock 7.1 after about 15 hours. China says about 240,000 people have been killed, although it is widely believed to have downsized them for political reasons. There were no immediate reports of damage from Sunday’s earthquake, which caused slight shaking in Beijing. The state-run Xinhua News Agency said passenger trains across the quake zone have been suspended pending an inspection of the railway infrastructure for damage. A video, posted on Twitter by Chinese media, showed items falling off store shelves in Tangshan. “I am still a little scared.
