Miliband admits that he is not an expert in structural engineering, but points out that the Turkish government’s mishandling of the repercussions of the devastating 1999 earthquake led to the overthrow of the prime minister.

Miliband describes the situation as “an absolute collapse of the urban environment”, causing “a lot of anger and grief”. He predicts that the response to the earthquake will affect the upcoming elections in Turkey, but with 10 million people upside down in the quake, it is difficult to predict how they will “vote and participate”.
