Scientists say that the second largest volcano in Hawaii did not erupt

HONOLULU – Scientists said in an update to an earlier warning that Hawaii’s second-largest volcano did not erupt.

The USGS said in a statement late Saturday that seismic activity beneath Kilauea Summit “has returned to background levels, ground deformation has stabilized, and no lava has been observed at the surface.”

The statement warned that “another intrusion or resumption may occur in the near future with little or no warning.”

The agency said earlier that a shallow seismic storm indicated that “the resumption of volcanic activity at Kilauea Summit is likely imminent.”

Scientists said Tuesday that lava has stopped flowing after 61 days of volcanic activity.

Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupted from September 2021 to last December. The 2018 Kilauea volcano eruption destroyed more than 700 homes.

For about two weeks this past December, Hawaii’s largest volcano, Mauna Loa, was also erupting on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Twin eruptions of Hawaii’s largest volcano provided a temporary boost to tourism during the slow season.
