The story of Kumari seeks to empower women in Nepal to express their annoyance with the practices that must be criticized, but have been pushed behind a crust of culture.

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake destroyed Nepal, killing 9,000 people and damaging more than 60,000 buildings in Kathmandu and surrounding areas, some of which turned into dust from shock. For Sophie Malevant, who was in Nepal when the earthquake struck, the crisis allowed her to look at the Himalayan nation again. In the same year, she published The Country That Shook, a children’s book designed to reintroduce young readers into the earthquake without causing shock. While the book started talks about catastrophe among students in some UK schools, in Nepal, the sales proceeds helped rebuild a school in Solokhombo. Three years later, when Maliphant, a UK-based graphic designer, visited the school, she started learning about the different menstruation practices observed in rural Nepal, including chhhaupadi or menstrual huts.

Although banned in 2005 and criminalized in 2017, the tradition of Chopadi – which destroys menstruating women to huts, and prevents them from entering common spaces within their homes – is still prevalent in many Nepalese societies, especially in the remote western region. “It is not a strange idea for me to see separation and menstruation side by side. Named after the mother of the deceased Sarita Gurung, 17, Kumari and her lunar cycle are a fairy tale of a young Nepalese woman who is led by “a sudden discovery of a bike in her village in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal on a journey through the nature of her female body life, enabling her to make her own decisions and appreciate innate wisdom.” Malevant met Gurung, a Dadeing citizen, at a workshop she helped conduct in her village a few years ago, and the two have been in contact since.
