M7.0 earthquake hits the Kermadec Islands, and there is no tsunami threat on the New Zealand mainland

The earthquake occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. Thursday

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck near the Kermadec Islands, but there is no danger of a tsunami in mainland New Zealand.

The depth of the earthquake, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, was about ten kilometers.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NIMA) confirmed that there is no danger of a tsunami for New Zealand.

“There is no risk of a tsunami for New Zealand following the M7.0 earthquake in the South Kermadec Islands,” New Zealand Civil Defense said Thursday.

The ROV has been brought under the sea to help research tsunami and earthquake risks posed by the Hikurangi subduction zone off the east coast of the North Island.

The US Tsunami Warning System, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, initially rated the quake at M7.1.

To prepare for a tsunami, Nima recommends having supplies and a plan ready in case one occurs.

Walk, run or cycle if possible to reduce the chances of getting stuck in traffic.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology also reported that there was no threat to that area after the quake.

This comes after an earlier warning was issued of a temporary threat to the Kermadec Islands region.
