An official bulletin said two earthquakes hit Assam on Saturday with a magnitude of 3.6 and 2.8. There were no immediate reports of any injury to anyone or damage to any property due to any of the earthquakes.

A report by the National Center for Seismology said that the first earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale was recorded at 9.03 am, and its epicenter was near Titapar in Jorhat district on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River, at a depth of 50 kilometers. Residents of the neighboring districts of Sivasagar, Karbi Anglong and Gulaghat were also shocked. Lakhimpur, on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra, also felt tremors.

The report stated that the earthquake could be felt in many areas in the northwestern part of Nagaland. It added that the second earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale was recorded at 11:02 am and its epicenter was near Dalgon in Darang district on the northern bank of Brahmaputra at a depth of 9 km.

This earthquake could be felt by people living in Udalgori, Baksa and Sonetpur district, while the people of Morigaon on the south bank of the mighty river also received the earthquake. The northeastern region is located in the highly seismic zone, as the region is frequently hit by earthquakes.
