4.6 earthquake near Whakatán – 300 recorded across the Bay of Plenty

More than 300 earthquakes were recorded by GeoNet over the weekend, as earthquakes continue to batter areas across the Bay of Plenty.

GeoNet said in a tweet at 10.43am that a 4.6-magnitude earthquake caused moderate shaking near Whakatane.

The quake was recorded 20 kilometers west of Whakatán at a depth of 4 kilometers, with more than 866 people saying they felt it, although the light was mostly weak.

GeoNet said yesterday that an earthquake swarm was occurring overnight southwest of Kauru, but was felt across the Bay of Plenty.

“We have recorded more than 40 earthquakes so far, the largest of which were M4.8 and M4.6,” they said.

“This swarm is in an area similar to the swarms that occurred in 2018 and 2019.”

However, GeoNet said residents in the area need not worry.

“It can be disturbing to feel that the earthquakes are so close together in time, but this is a typical activity for the area, and our team is keeping an eye on things,” they said.
