A PETA field researcher saves a cat from the Türkiye earthquake

Nine-month-old kitten Beza lives with her new family in Virginia Beach after days of living under the rubble of the earthquake.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — A cat rescued from rubble in Turkey has a new lease on life in Virginia Beach, thanks to a Betta rescuer.

“We bonded instantly,” said Alex Kochall. “Within two to three days, he was running the show in this house.”

Cutshall, a field researcher with PETA, volunteered to rescue animals trapped in the ruins of cities across Turkey devastated by a magnitude 4.5 earthquake.

He said he raced against time to pull the animals out before the buildings were demolished by zoning crews. In one of these buildings, Kochal discovers a little black cat.

“There was a crane guy a couple blocks away, we were trying to hit those buildings that were soon being demolished and we walked behind the back of one and there was a pizza, just poking his head out,” Kochal said.

The nine-month-old kitten was named “Pisa” because it was rescued from a building that looked like the “Leaning Tower of Pisa”.

Cutshall booked the return trip to America, with Pisa in tow. This happened just days before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) temporarily suspended pet travel from Turkey.

“They wanted him to stay in a soft carrier, but I felt unavoidable, and he hung on my lap for most of the trip purring, which was a great conversation starter,” said Cutshall.

Now, Pisa has a new home with three other animal siblings. Kochal said Beza is adding the final piece to their family.

“It’s unbelievable, and we all love it so much,” said Cutshall.

Kochal said the Global Compassion Fund through PETA has made it possible to respond to all kinds of emergencies and help animals around the world.
