An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale off the coast of Oman

An earthquake of average magnitude 5.8 was recorded in the Arabian Sea on Thursday morning.

The earthquake, which occurred at 7.24 am according to the National Center of Meteorology, hit off the coast of Oman in what is called the Owen Fracture Zone.

The NCM website stated that the quake occurred at a depth of 45 km.

There are no social media posts for residents of Oman reporting any earthquakes.

Two slightly smaller events were recorded in the same area in the early hours of April 4, at magnitudes of 5.1 and 5.2, and depths of 46 km and 15 km, respectively.

In February, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake was detected in Oman near the coast.

The seismic event occurred at 7.55 am near the city of Duqm, famous for its deep sea port on the Arabian Sea.

Duqm residents told The National that the tremors were strong enough to cause crockery and cups to rattle.

Seismic events with a magnitude of less than 3.5 are generally not felt, while seismic events with a magnitude of 3.5 to 5.5 are felt, but rarely cause damage.

Those of magnitude 5 to 6 on the Richter scale that regularly crash into the main fault line in Iran are commonly felt in Dubai and the Northern Emirates but are not dangerous.

Events that measure 7 or more on the scale are considered “major”. A 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria on February 6 killed more than 50,000 people and caused widespread damage in both countries.
