San Francisco kicks off a week of earthquake remembrance events

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Emergency Department is hosting a series of events this week to commemorate the 1906 earthquake and fire.

Action kicks off at 5:12 a.m. Tuesday with the commemoration of the 117th anniversary of the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906.

People will gather as they do every year at Lotta’s Fountain on Market Street where Jerry and Kearney Streets meet – the place where many of the townspeople gathered to await help after the devastating earthquake.

After the commemoration, a parade will head to the golden fire hydrant at the corner of 20th and Church Streets for the annual repaint ceremony.

The water hydrant is believed to have been the only source of water volunteers used in their successful attempt to protect the south side of the Mission District from the massive post-earthquake fires that swept through the city, according to San Francisco Emergency Management officials.

On Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., people are also welcome to attend the department’s “Get Ready, Stay Prepared” community preparedness exhibit at the Main Public Library and Fulton Plaza.

The event will include an earthquake simulator, giveaways, free lunch for the first 350 participants, hands-on preparedness training and workshops on how to prepare for a disaster.

On Thursday and Friday, the ministry will host workshops, which are not open to the public, to test new plans for distributing disaster supplies and to ensure a “more equitable, community-driven emergency response.”
