‘Like an earthquake’: New York City parking garage partially collapses

NEW YORK — A parking garage collapsed at least partially Tuesday in the financial district of lower Manhattan, according to city officials and a bystander’s video showing cars hanging precariously from a curved rooftop. Officials did not immediately release any information on injuries, but a person in a business suit was seen carrying a stretcher.

The crash occurred in the late afternoon at the parking lot on Ann Street, a few blocks from City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge, and about a half mile from the New York Stock Exchange.

“It felt like an earthquake,” said Liam Gita, a student at nearby Pace University. He said he heard “a loud noise and a big roar, and then we were all evacuated.”

Emergency responders and construction officials gathered at the scene, and police urged pedestrians to evacuate. Fabian Levy, a spokesman for New York Mayor Eric Adams, said he was on his way. He described what happened as a partial collapse.
