NYC parking garage partially collapses, kills one: ‘Like an earthquake’

A person was killed when a parking garage partially collapsed in New York City.

The city’s mayor, Eric Adams, said five people were injured.

The three-story building fell at around 4pm local time (6am EDT) a few blocks from City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge.

It is less than 1 km from the New York Stock Exchange.

Bystander video shows cars hanging precariously from the building’s twisted rooftop.

“It felt like an earthquake,” said Liam Gita, a student at nearby Pace University.

He said he heard “a big noise and a big sound, and then we were all evacuated.”

Other Pace students described hearing screams and seeing cars fall into the building when it collapsed.

The fire department said there have been reports of people trapped and searches are underway to make sure everyone is held accountable.

At one point, the department said, firefighters were withdrawn due to concerns about the stability of the building.
