WHO and partners help more than a billion people quit tobacco to reduce risk of COVID-19
GENEVA – A new accession initiative to quit tobacco aims to help the world’s 1.3 billion tobacco users. Smoking cessation is more important than ever before because evidence reveals that a smoker is more likely than a non-smoker to have serious consequences from COVID-19.
The project provides people with free access to nicotine replacement therapy and Florence, a digital health worker based on artificial intelligence who dispels the myths surrounding COVID-19 and tobacco and helps people develop a personalized tobacco cessation plan.
It is led by the World Health Organization (WHO), together with the UN Interdepartmental Working Group on Noncommunicable Diseases, PATH and the Coalition for Access to Medicines and Products with NCDs, with the support of the private sector.
The WHO FCTC Secretariat welcomes this initiative. The Head of the Convention Secretariat commented: “This will contribute to the parties applying Article 14 of the Convention to measures related to addiction and tobacco cessation. And, as stated earlier: there has never been a more appropriate time to support people in their efforts to stop using tobacco. “

WHO received the first donation of nicotine replacement therapies for this project from Johnson & Johnson Consumer Health. The manufacturer has donated 37,800 nicotine patches to help 5,400 people in Jordan quit smoking. These efforts will help the WHO respond to the current pandemic and improve health outcomes.
Florence was created with technology developed by Soul Machines Digital People, based in San Francisco and New Zealand, with the support of Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud.
Jordan, which has some of the highest tobacco use rates in the world, will be the first pilot country with additional companies and countries to join the debate. HRH Crown Princess Dina Mired of Jordan, President of the International Union for Cancer Control, said: “I am pleased that Jordan is part of this initiative to help advocate for tobacco control and support civil society organizations in their further efforts to smoke healthier, a free future.
