4.4 magnitude earthquake hits Türkiye

An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck 11 kilometers southwest of Sivris, Turkey, on Thursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. Sivrice is a town in Elazig Province in Türkiye.

The quake occurred at 04:14:09 (UTC 05:30) and struck Sevres, Turkey at a depth of 11.2 km with the epicenter 38.396°N 39.194°E, the USGS reported. There were no reports of injuries.

Another earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck 23 km southwest of Evsin, Turkey on April 17. It occurred at 04:25:57 (UTC 05:30) and struck Avsin, Turkey at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter was 38.078°N, 36.762°E.

This came about two months after a more severe earthquake devastated the same area. The quake was preceded by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6, 2023 that struck 11 Turkish provinces, including Malatya.

The February 6 earthquake caused more than 48,000 deaths in both Turkey and Syria, as well as the collapse or severe damage to 173,000 buildings in Turkey. The area has since experienced approximately 10,000 aftershocks, making it dangerous for people to enter damaged buildings.

The earthquake – in one of the most active seismically active regions in the world – hit populated areas where many slept, in homes that had not been built to withstand such powerful tremors.

The disaster put pressure on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the slow response to the earthquake and why his government allowed such poor-quality buildings to be erected.

After the 1999 earthquake killed more than 17,000 people in northwest Turkey, Turkish officials had promised that building regulations would be strengthened.

Media reports said that more than 84,000 buildings either collapsed, needed urgent demolition, or were badly damaged in the February 6 earthquake.

The city has suffered several earthquakes—one roughly every 100 years—and it’s no stranger to rebuilding.
