Earthquake survivors receive support from the Yukon government

The Yukon government announced its financial support for earthquake survivors in Türkiye and Syria.

On February 6, deadly earthquakes ravaged southeastern Turkey and the northwest region of Syria killing more than 55,000 people, while displacing millions in desperate need of shelter, food, clean water and sanitation.

To support the resettlement of people affected by the natural disaster, the government of Yukon has donated $25,000 to Yukon Cares, a local group of volunteers who work to bring refugee families to the territory.

“We will respond to every request we receive and address individual or family needs,” said Robin Fairburn, co-president of Yukon Cares.

“This may include help with paperwork, enrolling children in school, accessing government services, and introducing them to the community and available supports.”

The earthquake survivor support program will be offered for one year. Fairburn said Yukon Cares is making preparations to welcome newcomers to the territory.

“We have found the Whitehorse community as a whole to be welcoming, generous and eager to help newcomers,” she said.

Fairburn said the group is working in conjunction with the United Church to organize fundraisers and provide stabilization services.

A support desk has been set up to provide assistance and resources to those affected by the earthquake.

According to a government statement, “This temporary measure will provide information about immigration and family reunification, connect employers with incoming immigrants and help new Youkins employees find employment.”

The statement said the government will prioritize applications under the Yukon Nominee Program from eligible citizens from Turkey and Syria, using the existing immigration pathway to support people from affected areas to find work in Yukon and will complement federal support that prioritizes processing of temporary and permanent residency. Prime Minister Rang Pillay said Yukoners stand by the people of Turkey and Syria after the earthquake, adding that since the accident, the government has been working to help the survivors.

“By donating to Yukon Cares as well as additional assistance and resources for those affected, our government is taking action to support those in need while promoting Yukon as a place for everyone to call home,” he said.

Yukon has hosted refugees fleeing war and other natural disasters. Recently, victims of war in Ukraine have arrived in the territory and received support and integration resources from Yukon Cares and other local organizations.
