The earthquake in Rockwood is the most recent earthquake across eastern Tennessee

A 2.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Rockwood, Tennessee, on Saturday at about 11 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS said this was a relatively weak earthquake. The quake was felt as far as Knoxville, eastern Nashville, and northern Georgia.

And the US Geological Survey went on to say that over the past three weeks there has been an increase in activity in this area, although it is a mild earthquake. On Thursday, a magnitude 2.1 earthquake occurred, the epicenter of which was around Athens, and a week ago a magnitude 2.2 earthquake was recorded near the Dunlap area. Four months ago, a magnitude 2.0 earthquake with its epicenter occurred just north of Dayton along with a magnitude 1.8 earthquake in the Sweetwater area.

Although earthquakes occur in the East Tennessee region, the USGS said most earthquakes in Tennessee occur more often in the West Tennessee region. Western Tennessee lies within the New Madrid Seismic Zone, an area best known for the catastrophic series of earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 that were centered near New Madrid County, Missouri. This earthquake created the Reelfoot Lake area. The force of the earth’s disturbances drowned the inhabitants of an Indian village and diverted the Mississippi River to flow backwards for a short period of time, creating the lake where the water overflowed its banks. It also created two temporary waterfalls in the Mississippi River

On average, about 200 events measured annually from 1.0 to 3.0 occur annually. These are capable of causing local minor damage.

The USGS said the earthquake earlier today in East Tennessee is unlikely to be associated with the New Madrid seismic region. However, while western Tennessee has a higher frequency of damaging shaking earthquakes, the risk is not as low in central and eastern Tennessee. In today’s earthquake zone, the USGS says that this region is likely to experience 50 to 100 devastating earthquakes over 10,000 years. While this number is low, it is much higher than anywhere else in the eastern half of the United States.
