Long road to recovery for earthquake victims in Türkiye and Syria

Just over two months ago, a devastating earthquake struck Türkiye and Syria. Causing massive damage and loss of life, many buildings in the area were destroyed or damaged. Aftershocks were felt for several days throughout the region following the initial quake.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, the Christian organization Baptist World Aid worked actively to bring relief to those affected. They have worked alongside partner churches in the area, where millions of people now face the harsh reality of homelessness.

Hana Moeda is the Director of National Engagement at Baptist World Aid, and she joined us recently at 20Twenty to share an update on how victims are coping with the impact of the earthquake. Against the backdrop of years of civil war and displacement, this has been a difficult time for the people of Türkiye and Syria.

Damage to infrastructure

“With close to 50,000 people killed, entire families dealing with this,” says Hannah. “There’s also a lot of trauma thinking about being able to get back on buildings and trusting they’re not going to fall. It’s really horrific on that level.”

With so much damage to infrastructure like schools, there is a whole generation of children who are missing out on their education. Trying to get into temporary structures and teach in those areas is very problematic.

“Slow recovery is something we all have to deal with,” says Hannah. We’ll get there, but it’ll take some time. And we have to think about longevity with this kind of recovery, too. It’s a heartbreaking concept to think about how long that will take.

Christian agencies together

Many Christian agencies have come together to provide assistance and provide relief to those affected by the disaster. Besides Baptist World Aid, other organizations such as World Vision, Samaritan’s Purse, and the Red Cross work together to support victims.

These agencies have been actively involved in search and rescue operations, setting up emergency shelters, and distributing aid to those in need. Their collective efforts have undoubtedly made a huge impact on the lives of those affected by this disaster, demonstrating the power of unity and compassion in times of crisis.

“If we are able to receive more funding in situations like this, what we can do is think in the long term,” says Hannah. “What about recovery? How do we make sure that people who have been traumatized receive appropriate counseling in order to get on with their lives?”

“We need to provide all the things that people need on a daily basis in order to keep moving forward.”
