A 14-year-old San Diego student helps Türkiye earthquake victims

San Diego student Arden Bala’s family has deep roots in Türkiye.

SAN DIEGO — A 14-year-old Francis Parker Middle School student has started an initiative to help those suffering in Turkey after the devastating earthquake.

Two months ago, a powerful earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing thousands and displacing 2.6 million people.

A San Diego student, Arden Bala’s family has deep roots in Türkiye.

“My parents are from Turkey,” Bala said. “My family lives in Turkey and I also have many cousins ​​in Turkey.”

Bala’s mother, Zeynep Ilgaz, said, “Many of our family members have lost their homes. We have one family member who sadly lost, but it is hard for us. We are grateful for every last person who is alive.”

Bala started his own non-profit called Sports 4 Kids. On Saturday, he organized an event called “Bags of Hope” to help children in Turkey affected by the earthquake.

Thanks to a $750 grant from the Hersey Foundation, he and volunteers are collecting nearly 200 bags filled with toiletries, lip balm, Rubik’s cubes and handwritten notes from third graders at Cesar Chavez Elementary.

“Since the terrible earthquake, I wanted to make a little change because so many people were affected by this,” Bala said.

“This is important because tomorrow is Children’s Day in Turkey, so it makes it especially important and special for us. I want these children to know that everyone in the world is thinking of them,” I help IIgaz.

Over the past two months, Turkey House in Balboa Park has raised $250,000 for earthquake victims. The speaker of the Turkish Parliament told CBS 8 that the money will be used for 50 small homes for those in need.

Bala says they will send the bags on Sunday to children in different cities across Turkey.

“It feels good,” Bala said. “I know this is going to go to those in need and I hope they enjoy it and all these volunteers are making some change.”
