7.3-magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesia, triggering tsunami warning

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit western the Indonesian island of Sumatra today, Tuesday, the Indonesian Geophysics Agency said, prompting a tsunami warning.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) had earlier estimated the earthquake to be a magnitude of 6.9.

The country’s meteorological department added that the quake, which occurred at a depth of 84 kilometers (52.2 miles), triggered a tsunami warning. The agency called on the local authorities to issue immediate instructions to the residents of the affected area to stay away from the beaches.

The quake occurred at around 3 am local time (2000 GMT). BMKG data showed that a number of aftershocks were detected later on, some of which registered about 4 degrees.

Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency said authorities are collecting data from the islands closest to the epicenter off the western coast of Sumatra, said ministry spokesman Abdul Mahari.

Abdul, who was in Padang, said the earthquake was strongly felt in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, and some people moved away from the beaches.
