“Oh my God, it’s a massive earthquake”: Ian Smith shrieked live

Former New Zealand broadcaster and veteran broadcaster Ian Smith thought he had tested it all until he pulled on his headphones on Wednesday morning.

The internationally renowned cricket commentator was just over an hour into his regular Senz morning radio show when a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 21 km near the rural settlement of Pōrangahau at 10.16 am.

Smith at Hawke’s Bay, broadcasting from his studio near Havelock North, remained in his seat and spoke to listeners through vibration that he said lasted about 20 seconds.

“Oh my God, we’ve got a massive earthquake here in Hawke’s Bay. How does that go? Everything is still shaking,” Smith said of Saines.

“Oh my God, that’s a massive earthquake…and it’s still shaking. Oh my God, I’ve never commented on an earthquake before. That’s interesting.”

The still camera wobbled and a plant in the background could be seen shaking as Smith continued.

Smith played 63 Tests and 93 ODIs for New Zealand between 1980 and 1992, then went on to a successful broadcasting career.

Smith confirmed in January that he had parted ways with Sky TV, after working for the broadcaster for 23 years as chief cricket commentator and rugby commentator.
