A 5.0-magnitude earthquake strikes southwestern Türkiye

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale rocked Turkey’s southwestern province of Muğla late Wednesday evening, according to a statement from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The statement said the quake occurred at 11 p.m. local time (8 p.m. GMT) at a depth of 54 km off the coast of Datca near the Aegean Sea.

Turkey is among the most seismically active regions in the world as it sits on several active fault lines, the most devastating of which is the North Anatolian Fault (NAF), the meeting point of the Anatolian and Eurasian tectonic plates. More than 50,000 people lost their lives after two major earthquakes struck southeastern Turkey on February 6.
