A 5.5-magnitude earthquake shakes Luzon

MANILA, Philippines – A 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit the waters off Occidental Mindoro at midnight Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) bulletin showed.

Vivolex said the tectonic quake had its epicenter 16 km northwest of the town of Calentan at a depth of 44 km.

It was felt in different parts of Luzon and caused shaking of Intensity IV in Puerto Galera and Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, while shaking of Intensity III was felt in Lemery, Calatagan, Batangas, San Ildefonso and Bulacan.

II intensity was recorded in the following areas:

Abucay, Bataan Basin, San Luis, Baoan, Laurel, Batangas City, and Sta. Teresita (Batangas) Marilao, Malolos City, Guiguinto, Calumpit, and Pulilan (Bulacan) Tagaytay City and Ternate (Cavite) Muntinlupa City (Metro Manila) Abra De Ilog, Western Mindoro Victoria, Eastern Mindoro

Vivoleks said that while they don’t expect any damage, they warned that aftershocks could still occur.

Even before Phivolcs issued the bulletin, many residents in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces reported feeling the earthquake.

Earlier, the USGS said the quake had a magnitude of 5.2 off the coast, with the epicenter located 18 kilometers southeast of Calatagan, Batangas.
