A 5.2-magnitude earthquake strikes the nearby town of Occidental Mindoro

MANILA, Philippines — A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck 19 kilometers southeast of Luc in Occidental Mindoro around 12:00 a.m. Saturday, according to state seismologists from Vivolex.

A statement issued by the Civil Defense Office on Saturday stated that “no human or material losses have been reported as of the time of the report.”

Strong earthquakes, such as the intensity felt in Occidental Mindoro, were generally felt by most people both indoors and outdoors.

“Many sleeping people are waking up. Some are scared, some are running outdoors. Strong tremors and vibrations were felt throughout the building. Hanging objects swayed violently. Dinnerware was rattling, some were broken,” said Phivolks.

“Small, light and unstable objects may fall or tip over. Liquids leak from open, filled containers. Standing vehicles sway noticeably. The shaking of leaves and branches of trees can be observed.”

The OCD office has advised local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management offices to report any untoward incident caused by the earthquake to MIMAROPA.

While aftershocks are expected from the quake, Vivoleks said they do not expect any damage from the accident. The government has not yet issued any tsunami threats.
