5 earthquakes hit China, the Chinese government imposes sanctions on US lawmakers

A series of disasters continues in China, with ongoing floods and five earthquakes on July 12 and 13. On July 12, this included a 5.1-magnitude earthquake about 19 miles from Tangshan in Hebei, raising fears of a repeat of a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in 1976 that killed more than 240,000 people.

On the same day, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake occurred about 34 miles from Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan. An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 struck about 35 miles from the Ganan Tibetan Autonomous Province in Gansu. An earthquake measuring 4.1 degrees struck 84 miles from Hotan County in Xinjiang. The next day, on July 13, a 5-magnitude earthquake struck about 22 miles from I-Li in Xinjiang.

The Chinese leadership imposed sanctions on three US lawmakers and one ambassador. This was done publicly in response to their work to punish CPC officials involved in human rights violations of Muslims in Xinjiang. Under the sanctions imposed on US officials, Senator Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Representative Chris Smith and Ambassador of Religious Freedom Sam Brownback will not be able to travel to China, and while the Chinese Communist Party has not given full details, the Foreign Ministry spokesman says the sanctions will reflect those imposed on Chinese officials.
