Dr. Vipin Kumar said that Chamoli was hit by devastating earthquake in 1999 and Uttarkashi in 1991. Chamoli earthquake was just 26 km from Joshimath and Uttarkashi earthquake was about 20 to 30 km from Bhatwadi. Recently, this search began after cracks appeared in Joshimath. This research was published in the Department of General Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences of the European Geosciences Union in April 2023.
