The Healdsburg Fire and Earthquake Safety Show provides emergency information and family activities

Sonoma County residents are invited to learn how to stay safe during fires, earthquakes, floods and other emergencies at a free event in Healdsburg on Saturday.

The Fire & Earthquake Safety Expo, taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Healdsburg Community Center, will feature dozens of local first responders and exhibitors.

It is hosted by the city of Healdsburg and the Healdsburg Kiwanis Club, which is celebrating its centenary and presenting the event as a gift to the community, according to club president Dennis Steed.

“We’re preparing for at least 1,500 people, maybe 2,000,” Stead said.

Planned highlights for the event, a first for Healdsburg, include the landing of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, the Henry-1, at 11:30 a.m. on the blacktop next to the community center.

Many local fire brigades will be on hand for information and donations, Steed said, including the Healdsburg Fire Department, which is bringing its own ladder truck, which features a 107-foot ladder and a 500-gallon water tank. The City of Healdsburg will also provide revised evacuation maps for residents to use in the event of an emergency.

County officials will also fly and display drones at the event, and will examine drone video footage of recent Russian river flows that affected Healdsburg and western Sonoma County during the atmospheric river chain during the winter.

Other demonstrations will include a portable earthquake simulator provided by Pacific Gas & Electric that Stead said will allow attendees to feel the effects of the earthquake and the rolling. There will also be a live fire suppression demonstration and preparation workshops in English and Spanish, Steed said.

In addition to on-site parking, attendees will be able to park at nearby Healdsburg High School, 1024 Prince Ave. Shuttle bus ride to and from the event.

Steed said the fair will also feature kid-friendly activities including hands-on tours of fire department trucks and equipment and a free lunch of sausage and chili for 500 people, first come, first served.
