Much of the rubble had already been removed, piling up a mess of shattered concrete and steel cables. But slabs of soggy multi-story buildings still dot the landscape, a grim reminder of the tragic fate of tens of thousands of people.

Özge found her mother and father safe in the coastal city of Samandağ in southern Hatay province, and one of her aunts was rescued from the rubble. But five other members of her family were not so lucky – they were buried under collapsed buildings.

Ozge’s dark brown eyes filled with angry tears as she explained what happened that day. They died because the rescue teams did not reach the area in time. The whole city was suffering and crying and pleading for help – but no help came.”

Özge decided to stay in Samandağ to support Oxfam’s KEDV emergency response as well as her family, including her elderly grandmother who has mobility issues. She now lives in a tent with her parents, two brothers and a sister.

“For now, I’m going to stay here because that’s where I belong. I grew up here — the people here deserve support and I feel I need it. I’m one of them, so I can understand their feelings and situation.”

Provide vital support to earthquake survivors

Ozge plays a crucial role in the response, and will continue her coordination work with women’s cooperatives that are part of Oxfam’s KEDV partner network, to help them get the support they need. She also works alongside her colleagues to distribute resources such as hygiene kits, which help prevent disease outbreaks and give people a sense of dignity. Ozge also helps train community members to support humanitarian response activities.

“I’m learning a lot,” she says, smiling.

In the first months after the earthquakes, Oxfam’s KEDV emergency response reached 24,000 people. This includes providing hygiene kits to 3,000 families, dignity kits (including bed pads and incontinence) to 1,800 people, and menstrual hygiene kits to 7,200 women and girls in Hatay and Kahramanmaraş provinces.
