A pair of earthquakes rattle in Georgia near the Alabama border

According to the USGS, a pair of earthquakes struck moments away in northwest Georgia near the state line border with eastern Alabama. The first earthquake struck at 12:24 this afternoon. This event occurred with a magnitude of 2.4 from a depth of 9.9 km. Just 3 minutes later, at 12:27, a second earthquake struck with a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale and a depth of 10.4 km. The epicenters are located about 500 feet apart and struck about 1,500 feet from the Alabama/Georgia state line near Lookout Mountain Parkway and the Georgia city of Menlo.

Georgia is not usually known for its earthquakes, but they do happen from time to time. On June 18 last year, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck, prompting a bulletin from the National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning Center. This earthquake, with its epicenter near Stillmore, was felt throughout the metro Atlanta area as well as in southern and eastern Georgia near the Atlantic coast. No major damage was reported and no tsunami occurred. The last earthquake within 30 miles of that quake of similar magnitude occurred in 2003. That quake, with a magnitude of 3.6, hit Copeton, Georgia. Before that, there was a 3.7 magnitude event in Hixton that hit in 1976.

In general, weak earthquakes affect Georgia from time to time with no other major earthquakes occurring in the state over the past year. There has only been one other earthquake in Georgia in the last 30 days and a total of 12 earthquakes in the last 90 days. Six of those earthquakes, including the two that hit today, are rated magnitude 2.0 or greater. Today’s event with a magnitude of 2.4 was the strongest in the state since the event of June 18, 2022.
