A 6.5-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks hit the western coast of Japan

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake and a series of powerful aftershocks rocked Ishikawa Prefecture on Japan’s west coast on Friday, according to Bloomberg News. The earthquake caused multiple houses to collapse in Suzu City.

Speaking to the media, the head of the National Public Safety Commission, Koichi Tani, reported that one person died and a number of landslides were reported. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of the possibility of more landslides and aftershocks.

“There is no threat of a tsunami from the quake. The government is sending a team to assess the damage. Local officials have not requested help from the country’s Self-Defense Forces,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said at an emergency press conference.

The quake, which struck at 2:42 pm local time, did not cause power outages in the surrounding areas or damage communications networks or gas and refining facilities, according to government ministries.

An official at the Japanese Nuclear Regulatory Authority said that the nuclear power plants of Hokuriku Electric Power Company and Japan Atomic Energy Corporation were not affected. Tokyo Electric Power Holdings Inc said on its Twitter account that the parked Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant sustained no damage from the quake, Bloomberg reported.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was in Singapore meeting his counterpart Lee Hsien Loong on Friday, with plans for a summit in South Korea starting on Sunday. Matsuno said nothing has been decided on whether the quake will affect Kishida’s travel plans.

Western Japan Railways said operations of express trains between Nagano and Kanazawa stations stopped shortly after the tremors began, but resumed later in the afternoon. She added that delays of up to 90 minutes affected thousands of people who were traveling during the Golden Week holiday in Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was at a depth of 12 kilometers and had an intensity of 6 out of 7 on the Japan shaking scale. The agency had earlier estimated that the quake had a depth of 10 kilometers and a magnitude of 6.3.
