Biggest earthquake in 10 years shakes Donegal

Donegal is the most seismically active area in Ireland

An earthquake of magnitude 2.5 was recorded in County Donegal in the early hours of Saturday morning, experts said.

The Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) reported that the quake occurred at 01:32 local time near Glenveagh National Park.

It is known to be one of the largest land earthquakes in Ireland since records began.

The National Institute of Weather Statistics had previously detected a magnitude 2.5 earthquake on 26 January 2012 on the Fanad Peninsula, also in Donegal.

It is operated by the Department of Geophysics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) with support from the Geological Survey of Ireland.

Dr Martin Mullhoff of DIAS told the BBC that Donegal is the most seismically active area in Ireland.

“Overall, Ireland is relatively quiet in terms of seismicity, and an earthquake is felt on average about every two years,” he said.

“For yesterday’s event, we have received over 100 felt reports and there are still many more to come.”

People who live nearby have reported a booming sound that woke them up from their sleep, according to comments on the Donegal Daily Facebook page.

Many said they assumed it was thunder or an explosion.

“I actually heard it and the house shook,” said a woman from Church Hill.

The earthquake was also detected by several Raspberry Shake seismometers operated by citizens and schools in counties Antrim, Dublin and Sligo.

Dr Mollhoff said reports from the public provided “valuable information” and urged people who may have felt the quake to submit a report on their website.
