Plumas County – A moderate earthquake rocked the northern Central Valley Thursday afternoon.

The earthquake appears to have had its epicenter in Lake Almanor, northeast of Chico, about 2.5 miles southwest of the Plumas County community of the East Shore.

According to the US Geological Survey, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck just before 4:20 PM PST. Originally rated as a 5.5 strength shaker, it was later downgraded to 5.4, and re-rated to a 5.5.

Residents across the region reported feeling a strong tremor.

“The first thing I noticed was that I heard clanking on a shelf nearby,” said Dan Adams, a Nevada City resident and former television reporter.

The Nevada County Planning Commission, which was discussing a controversial plan to reopen an old gold mine, was meeting when the earthquake struck. Their reactions were videotaped the moment the shaking began.
